Ink Tank Models Drive Printer Shipment Growth in Q1
According to data from the IDC Worldwide Quarterly Hardcopy Peripherals Tracker, the global hardcopy peripherals (HCP) market continued its upward trajectory in Q1 2025, marking a third consecutive quarter of year-over-year (YoY) growth. Unit shipments rose by 2.7% to an estimated 19.4 million. However, total shipment value declined by 3.2% YoY, falling to approximately $9.0 billion.
Among major regional markets, Western Europe stood out with a notable 10.1% YoY increase. In contrast, both the United States and China (PRC) experienced declines of 3.9% and 8.9%, respectively. The growth in Western Europe was fueled by rising demand for color inkjet multifunction printers (MFPs) featuring ink tank systems. As environmental consciousness gains traction among consumers and enterprises, ink tank models are increasingly favored for their eco-friendly, refillable design that reduces cartridge waste.
A key development in Q1 2025 was the continued expansion of ink tank printers, which posted their fourth straight quarter of global YoY growth. This trend was observed across most regions, reinforcing the category’s growing market presence. However, adoption in the United States and Japan remains limited. In these markets, entrenched preferences for laser and cartridge-based systems, slower shifts in retail channels, and long-standing consumer habits have hindered broader acceptance of ink tank technology.
Another significant highlight from the quarter was that all five leading vendors reported YoY shipment growth, with increases ranging from 1.3% to 14.0%. Much of this progress was driven by the broader appeal of ink tank devices, which vendors continue to promote for their cost-effectiveness and sustainability benefits. Despite higher upfront costs, these printers offer users long-term savings by reducing the frequency and expense of ink replacement—a value proposition that is resonating with both home users and businesses.
