The Shift to Aftermarket Supplies in Russia: Why is it a threat?

There is a unique situation taking place in the Russian laser office printing supplies market. So says leading Russian-base Information Agency “Business-Inform” who will report on their analysis of the market shift at the RT Imaging Summit—Europe 2016 on April 21-22 in Barcelona.

The growth of compatible (non-OEM) supplies in 2014-2015 led to the reduction of the OEM-cartridges share in Russia to a record low of 16.4% (in volume). At the same time the share of the remanufactured Aftermarket products grew to 62.7%, while the growth of new-built compatible cartridges grabbed 20.9% a market share.

Further, the advent of premium class, quality, new-built compatible cartridges has created an entirely new segment in Russia: the remanufacturing of empty new-built compatible cartridges.

Business-Inform’s director, Dr Stanislav Malinskiy, says the Russian market has become extremely favorable for suppliers and resellers of compatible supplies for laser printing equipment. “The market is growing. Its dynamics are positive.“ However, Malinskiy adds that the optimistic outlook that is visible today could change to a pessimistic one, and positive dynamics may turn negative quickly.

Malinskiy explains that despite the volume growth of compatible laser printing supplies by 8.6%, the actual value, in monetary terms, has decreased by 19%. The influx of low-cost, low-quality products has led more Russian buyers to become dissatisfied with may assuming ALL non-OEM products (remanufactured, new-built and remanufactured-new-built) are poor in quality and should be avoided (forecasted to be 30% of buyers in 2016).

What will happen when the financial situation in Russia improves in the next 2 years? Will the procurement of compatible supplies decrease to less than 24% of the market? By that time it may be too late for the quality Aftermarket players to restore the image among buyers.

So “Who is to blame?” and “What do we have to do?” asks Dr Malinskiy. He says he will discuss the matter further at the RT Imaging Summit—Europe 2016 in Barcelona on April 21 and 22.

Other hot industry issues will also be addressed during the summit, with 12 experts on hand to share their analysis and insights.
