Open Tools Releases Video Demo of its Open-Source Printer
Paris-based startup Open Tools has released the first video of a working prototype of its open-source inkjet printer, the Open Printer, providing an update on a project that aims to offer a repairable, DRM-free alternative to conventional consumer printers, although key commercial details—including pricing, shipping timeline, and print speed—remain undisclosed nearly nine months after the project was first introduced on Crowd Supply.

The latest prototype is built around a Raspberry Pi Zero W, which functions as the print server, alongside an STMicroelectronics STM32 microcontroller that manages the cartridge board. Users interact with the printer through a 1.47-inch TFT LCD display and a jog wheel, while connectivity currently includes USB-C, USB-A, Bluetooth 4.1, and a 24V DC power input. According to Open Tools, the prototype is now capable of printing in both monochrome and full color.
Printing is handled through the open-source Common Unix Printing System (CUPS), enabling compatibility with Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS without requiring proprietary drivers. The printer is rated for resolutions of up to 600 dpi in black and 1200 dpi in color. It supports refillable HP 63 cartridges in the United States, HP 302 cartridges in Europe, and HP 803 cartridges in Asia, with black and color cartridges operating independently rather than preventing all printing when one cartridge is empty.
Despite its emphasis on openness, the project continues to rely on HP cartridge bodies with integrated printheads. As a result, compatibility with third-party ink depends on HP continuing to manufacture those cartridges in a form that remains refillable, highlighting a potential long-term limitation for the design.
The company has not yet announced a crowdfunding funding target, stating that the final retail price will depend on production volume, component costs, certification requirements, and remaining engineering work. Pricing is expected to be revealed when the crowdfunding campaign launches.
Open Tools first unveiled the Open Printer in October 2025 as a modular, repairable inkjet printer designed to eliminate digital rights management restrictions commonly associated with consumer printers. While the latest update demonstrates continued technical progress with a functional prototype, the project has yet to receive a confirmed launch date or commercial availability.
