HP Promises to Remove Cartridge Block

HP Inc. has apologized for blocking its rivals in the Aftermarket with a printer firmware upgrade that caused printers to stop working.

A new authentication feature in the software upgrade to the printers inadvertently disabled certain HP printers using third party cartridges from functioning.

Along with the apology, the printer OEM also said it would issue an optional software update to remove the block. According to the Wall Street Journal, HP Inc. admitted that it should have better explained to users the new authentication feature in software installed in printers.

Relying heavily on its ink and toner cartridges sales, HP has tried to protect its business and intellectual property. The protection include using security chips to detect and disable unauthorized or counterfeit cartridges.

According to Jon Flaxman(pictured), HP’s chief operating officer, it will continue to limit the use of unauthorized cartridges so as to protect its intellectual property, safeguard user security and give users the best experience. “However, we commit to improving our communication so that customers understand our concerns about cloned and counterfeit supplies,” he added. “Again, to our loyal customers who were affected we apologize.”
