3D Printer Industry Explodes

3D-printing registered an explosive growth in 2015. With all the medical, scientific and creative 3D news stories on TV and social media, together with major announcements from printer OEM brands, most are probably not surprised.

More than 278,000 desktop 3D printers were sold worldwide last year, with a growth of $1 billion for the second-consecutive year in a row.

According to the Wohlers Report 2016, the additive-manufacturing (AM) 3D-printing industry, consisting of all AM products and services worldwide, grew 25.9% (compound annual growth rate (CAGR)) to $5.165 billion in 2015. Over the past 27 years, the industry has experienced an impressive 26.2% CAGR.

Wohlers Associates report that, despite challenges, growth continued in many segments of the industry, particularly in metal AM and the desktop 3D printer segments. In 2015, manufacturers that sold industrial-grade AM systems grew twice as quickly as than their best performances in 2011.
