Staples Reveals Q1 Sustainability Update

A green start to 2017 for Staples Canada

Staples Canada revealed some impressive achievements in its first quarter sustainability update.

“Our recycling programmes and sustainability initiatives have started the year off on a strong note,” said Staples Canada Director of Facilities, Environment and Procurement Leigh Pearson.

For the three months ended 30 April, its battery recycling programme collected more than 46.5 tonnes in Q1 2017, a 9.4% increase over the previous quarter.

The writing instrument recycling initiative was on track for a record-breaking year, with the second highest collecting quarter in the programme’s five-year history. It collected 51.8% more than the same quarter last year at more than 80,000 units.

The electronics recycling programme collected more than 772 tonnes as Staples continues to be the leading choice for Canadian households looking to recycle disused machines and printers.

Staples’ Driver Take Back Programme collected more than 100,000 ink cartridges, 5.8 tonnes of electronics, and 130 kg of batteries.

In Q1, Staples Canada shaved 1,798 tonnes off its CO2 emissions, which is equivalent to the annual greenhouse gas output of 380 cars.
