Sales of Printers in Western Europe Up

There has been an increase in the number of printer sold in Western Europe, according to CONTEXT.

The prominent European IT market analysis company reports printer hardware unit sales rose a steady 1% year-on-year (YOY) in the second quarter (Q22015), driven mainly by multi-function devices.

Zivile Brazdziunaite, Imaging Market Analyst at CONTEXT, said: “Sales of Inkjet Multi-Function Printers (MFPs) through IT distributors increased by 4% and continued to account for 60% of all printer hardware sold in the region.” He added, “HP and Canon were responsible for most of the growth with year-on-year increases for the period of 5% and 17% respectively.”

In the same quarter, unit sales of laser Single-Function Printers (SFPs) decreased 10% while sales of laser MFPs were up 6%, due to the continuing trend to switch from SFPs to MSPs. Despite this, laser MFP revenues fell by 6%, as ASPs (Average Selling Prices), particularly that of color Laser MFPs dropped from €739 (US$ 846) to €635 (US$727). The decrease in ASPs was caused by harsh competition in the category and changes in the product mix as copier vendors continue to increase the number of A4 models they offer.

In the high-priced A3 color laser MFPs category, unit sales declined, but those priced under €1499 (US$ 1715) grew 22% YOY. Samsung lead the rankings with a market share of 37%, followed by Xerox (29%) and Oki respectively. With a surprisingly sharp increase of 15% in unit sales to reach 17% in Q22015, Oki rocketed to the third place.

Printer hardware sales in Western Europe, through the region’s IT distributors, varies from country to country, as do the economic conditions. Spain saw a rapid growth of 19% in unit sales, followed by France (9%) and Germany (1%). In Italy, sales remained flat. The UK saw unit sales decrease 4% YOY in Q22015 due to the mutual efforts from both vendors and distributors to maintain inventory levels.
