Kyocera Highlights Hazards of Fake Consumables

A campaign to warn about the risks of purchasing fake consumables has been launched by Kyocera in Europe. The company has already captured counterfeit products, worth over €5m since April this year.

In its last financial year, the company identified in excess of 100,000 counterfeit consumables units, worth well over €10m in total.

The sales manager for consumables and spares at Kyocera Document Solutions in the UK, Jonathan Robbins, said of the campaign, “Counterfeit imaging supplies are often dangerous, environmentally unfriendly and cheat consumers of the quality they are entitled to expect from branded consumables. It’s time to take the fight to the criminals, and stand up for resellers and businesses who are being duped into buying sub-standard products, often in good faith, by increasingly organised criminals.”

According to Kyocera, the use of fake toner and inkjet cartridges will cause bad user experiences such as streaky grey backgrounds, drop off, uneven print quality and ghosting on the page. Further, they can damage the good-quality printing products being used to print upon. Worse still, they could also damage the printers. Resellers are under no obligation to maintain customers’ machines if they use counterfeit consumables.

Robbins also adds, “We’re asking businesses to only buy from an approved Kyocera consumables partner or run the risk of supporting organised crime and trafficking gangs. Counterfeit products are increasingly hard to spot, so we would recommend resellers and customers are suspicious of consumables that do not have Kyocera labelling or an unrealistically low price. If in doubt, our team is available to answer any questions or verify suspect products.”
