KODAK LAUNCHES ITS FIRST EVER 3D PRINTER, THE PORTRAIT

US digital and photographic systems company Kodak has signalled a move into 3D printing by announcing its forthcoming Portrait desktop 3D printer together with a range of 3D printing materials.

The filaments, available in a range of colors, are set to be released this December ahead of the Portrait 3D Printer, which will available in early 2018 – pre-orders are already open with a 35% discount offer.

A printer aimed at the professional creative market

Kodak’s announcement promised “a new standard for professional 3D printing”. Joel Satin, Kodak’s VP Director of Brand Licensing, added that “professional 3D printing is a fast-evolving growth category Kodak has had its eye on for a while.”

Kodak’s 3D printer will be chiefly directed towards professionals in the “architectural studio, creative workspace or classroom.”

Printer features

The Portrait’s 200 x 200 x 250 mm build chamber is fully enclosed and features an air filtration system. The printer’s dual extruder is inbuilt with a sensor to detect low filament, while a secondary thermistor prevents the hot-ends from overheating.

The printer’s exterior features a built-in camera, a touchscreen and LED lights to indicate printing status.

The Portrait will also feature extensive connectivity including with Wi-Fi, USB, email, file sharing services, and social networks.

Open materials, open software

Maintaining an open software approach, the Kodak Portrait will be fully compatible third party CAD and slicing software.

While the Portrait 3D printer is compatible with other filaments, Kodak recommends using the PLA filament from its forthcoming range, which promises “low moisture content, high melt flow index and precise diameter.” Kodak’s filament is also fully compatible with other 3D printers.

The Kodak 3D printer is now available at a discounted price of $1819 for the first 500 units. Once these are sold the regular price will be $2,799.
