Court Hears HP’s IP Case

The Shanghai Intellectual Property Rights Court in China heard a patent-infringement case filed by Hewlett-Packard Development Company LP, a subsidiary of HP. The complain claims a local firm has illegally produced and sold a HP patented ink cartridge.

This is the first case heard by the court, which opened on January 1, according to a report by ecns.cn.

In this case, the plaintiff demanded Shanghai Yinjia International Trade Company (Yinjia) cease the infringement and pay RMB 1 million (US$162,501) compensation. Yinjia opposed HP’s allegations and argued that the technology used in its ink cartridge is different from that in HP’s HP818XL Black ink cartridge. The court did not give a ruling after the hearing.

By the end of March, nearly 300 complaints were filed with the court, of which 80% were patent-infringement cases.
