Blocking Third Party Cartridges Will Continue

HP says its firmware update that unblocks non-HP cartridges is only a temporary solution. The printer manufacturer says it will block non-HP cartridges again in the future, but will be more transparent about it.

Following an apology to consumers, HP has released the new firmware update allowing the third party cartridges to work again. However, the Dutch website Hardware.info was told by an HP spokesman that the OEM will continue to block non-HP cartridges but with better communication.

According to the OEM’s previous statement, HP is protecting its intellectual property, innovation and to protect the communication between the cartridge and the printer.

Myce.com comments that the unblocking update HPs release has been “a bit hidden.” This means HP prefers its customers to stay on the current firmware that blocks third party cartridges. It also added that the issue is not about “communication” but the fact that consumers will be forced to buy more expensive OEM ink cartridges.
