Canon Expands Remanufacturing Site to the U.S.
Canon is preparing to introduce its multifunction device (MFD) remanufacturing program in the United States, marking the next phase of a global initiative aimed at extending product lifecycles and reducing environmental impact. The effort will be carried out by Canon Inc. together with its subsidiaries Canon U.S.A. and Canon Virginia, with production currently scheduled to begin in April 2026 at the Virginia facility.

The program builds on Canon’s existing remanufacturing operations in Japan and Europe. At facilities run by Canon Ecology Industry in Japan and Canon Giessen in Germany, used multifunction devices are restored using proprietary technologies to meet near-new performance and quality standards before returning to the market. The Virginia site will adopt standardized production methods and remanufacturing technologies developed at those plants.
Canon’s office equipment is designed around a platform-based architecture that standardizes key structural elements within each product class. Models built on the same platform share common components, modules, and assembly procedures. This modular design allows parts to be interchangeable across different models and supports streamlined production lines—an approach that also simplifies the remanufacturing process while helping maintain consistent quality.
To determine which parts can be reused, Canon analyzes operational data from collected devices, including service life, maintenance records, and total print volume. Based on this information, the system automatically generates a list of components that require replacement. The process helps maximize parts reuse while improving efficiency during refurbishment.
With globally standardized processes in place, Canon says it expects to deliver competitively priced remanufactured devices that maintain high performance standards. The company estimates that more than 90% of components in each unit can be reused, supporting its broader environmental goals.
The Virginia operation will work alongside Canon U.S.A. to roll out the program in the U.S. market, where demand for refurbished office equipment is projected to remain steady in the coming years.
