This new factory is a key milestone in Epson’s long-planned localization strategy. According to local media reports, the choice of Chennai was not coincidental. As an industrial hub of Tamil Nadu, Chennai offers a mature electronics manufacturing ecosystem, a convenient port logistics network, and an abundant supply of skilled technical workers. These advantages align perfectly with Epson’s commitment to maximizing supply chain efficiency.

In its initial phase, the factory is planned to have a monthly production capacity of 20,000 units, focusing primarily on Epson’s EcoTank series inkjet printers. All products from this facility will be exclusively supplied to the Indian market. This production focus addresses India’s robust demand for printing devices: with the country’s digital transformation accelerating, household and SME demand for low-cost, high-durability printers is growing at over 5% annually. The high-capacity ink tank printers, known for their large ink reservoirs and low consumables cost, are well-positioned to meet these market needs.

Compared to traditional printers with ink cartridges, these printers offer a lower ink cost per milliliter and easier ink replacement, making them both more economical and more convenient for users. Less frequent ink replacement also means reduced consumables consumption and waste, helping to mitigate environmental impact. Since their 2010 launch, over 100 million units have been sold worldwide, including more than 8 million units in India to date. Previously, sales in India relied on imports from Epson’s factories in the Asia-Pacific and other regions. While this model reduced initial investment costs, it also resulted in long lead times, high inventory pressure, and substantial tariff costs as the market expanded.

The factory is jointly established with RIKUN Manufacturing, a partner with nearly 20 years of experience in India’s electronics manufacturing sector, particularly in precision assembly and supply chain management. Their collaboration is widely viewed as a strategic combination of Epson’s technology with RIKUN’s local resources. Upon commencement of operations in October 2025, the factory is expected to create 200 direct jobs, and – including upstream and downstream supporting industries – indirectly generate employment opportunities for over 1,000 people.

This new manufacturing facility is part of Epson’s broader efforts to localize production and cater to demand in India. Collaboration with local partners also serves to lay a foundation for building trust with the community. India is experiencing significant economic growth and has a wealth of human resources, making it a key region in Epson’s global strategy.
