Turn Trash into Treasure

Students from Polytechnic Kuching, Malaysia, have won the 2016 “Creating New Out of Old” competition with their genius renewable printer inks which were made out of used cooking oil.

According to the star, all the raw materials used to produce the inkjet are natural and sustainable. The Petrochemical Engineering Department students collected used cooking oil for the base from polytechnic’s cafeteria. They used turmeric (yellow), Rosella (red) and Asian pigeon wing flower (blue) for colors and mixed them with recycled waste cooking oil.

Due to a very low production cost, the students sell the inks at RM20 (US$ 4.78) per bottle of 50ml to fellow students, 70% lower than the market price for normal printer inkjet.

Out-beating 14 other groups in the higher education institutions category, the students have pocketed RM700 (around US$500) for their innovation.
