Patent Goes to Lexmark for Anti-Counterfeiting InnovationWith its innovative means to uncover counterfeit ink and toner products, printer giant Lexmark has been awarded a US patent (Patent No. 9,553,582).

Drawing on the concept of physical unclonable function (PUF), Lexmark creates such mechanism using a mixture of magnetic and non-magnetic particles, generating a motif that can be detected by a reader with low cost.

Lexmark reveals that counterfeit printer supplies such as toner bottles may perform poorly and damage printers. With this invention, customers will be able to identify fakers easier when they shop for the OEM’s products.

According to securingindustry.com, PUF is easy to evaluate but hard to predict or replicate.
