Open Tools Introduces Modular DRM-Free Inkjet Printer

Paris-based startup Open Tools has introduced the Open Printer, an open-source inkjet printer designed to improve repairability and compatibility with third-party ink cartridges. The device is expected to launch soon through a crowdfunding campaign on Crowd Supply.

Unlike most consumer printers that restrict third-party cartridges through digital rights management (DRM) systems, the Open Printer removes such limitations. It supports HP 63 (or HP 302 in Europe) cartridges in both black and color, allowing users to choose between original and third-party supplies.

The printer’s design emphasizes modularity and maintainability. Built with standard mechanical components and a Raspberry Pi W board as its controller, it aims to simplify assembly, modification, and repair. The open-source approach also means there are no proprietary drivers required for operation.

In addition to standard A4 and A3 sheets, the Open Printer can handle paper rolls up to 27 mm wide, featuring an integrated cutter for creating sheets or printing longer items such as banners. It offers Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, along with a small LCD display and jog wheel for local control.

Physically, the device measures approximately 50 × 10 × 11 cm (19.7 × 3.9 × 4.3 inches) and can be placed on a desk or mounted on a wall. Its elongated design and visible roll feed give it a distinctive appearance compared to typical desktop printers.

Open Tools has not yet announced pricing or a specific release date. Interested users can register on Crowd Supply to receive updates once the crowdfunding campaign goes live.
