Microsoft Announces Availability of Universal Print Anywhere

Microsoft has announced the general availability of Universal Print Anywhere, a new feature within Microsoft 365 that enhances secure cloud printing.

The service allows users to send print jobs to a cloud-based queue and release them only at a printer when they authenticate in person. This “pull-printing” approach helps prevent sensitive documents from being left unattended and reduces the risk of unauthorized access.

Universal Print Anywhere builds on Microsoft’s existing Universal Print service. Users no longer need to choose a printer in advance; instead, they can authenticate at any compatible device using a PIN, badge, or mobile app. This is especially useful in hybrid work environments where employees move between offices or shared workspaces.

The feature integrates with Azure Active Directory for identity verification and supports Mopria-certified printers, though some older models may require upgrades. It also enables centralized management for IT teams, allowing them to monitor queues, enforce policies, and track usage directly through the Microsoft 365 ecosystem.

By reducing reliance on on-premises print servers and minimizing the exposure of sensitive documents, Universal Print Anywhere strengthens enterprise security, supports compliance with data privacy regulations, and modernizes printing infrastructure.

Microsoft has indicated plans to expand compatibility and add AI-driven analytics to optimize print usage in future updates.
