Hackers Scam FBI, EPA and GSA for Printer Cartridges

According to Federal News Radio, $1.5 million worth of printer cartridges from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the General Services Administration (GSA) were stolen by hackers placing fraudulent contract orders.

Following an email to Schedule 70 and 75 vendors obtained by Federal News Radio, GSA noted that the hackers, disguised as federal contracting officials, used official federal employee credentials but fake telephone numbers, email addresses and stolen credit cards to order HP printer toner cartridges.

It is said by law enforcement officials that criminals are targeting orders for laptop computers, with GSA observing some remarkable similarities between the two cases and doing further investigation.

Other agencies being scammed include: the Fish and Wildlife Service, the Census Bureau, and the Department of Health and Human Services.  Sadly, the number of victims is increasing.
