In a communication event held by Zhongshan Printing Consumables Association held on July 13, 2019, one speaker Yu Peng shared some data of the Chinese e-commerce market of compatible consumables.

As of May 2019, there are almost 770 million Internet users in China, which is one-fifth of the worldwide number and the Internet penetration rate is 56.3%. In Q1 and Q2 2019, the total online retail sales is up to 6.2785 trillion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 27%.

Mr. Peng mainly shared the data of three main online sites Taobao, Jingdong and Pinduoduo.

From May 2018 to May 2019, the total sales of toner cartridges on Taobao is RMB ¥3.06 billion/US $4.45 billion, of which toner cartridges accounted for 45%, ink cartridges accounted for 24%, toner accounted for 16%, ribbons accounted for 11% and carbon ribbon accounts for 4%.

In the past 12 months, there are over 310.5 million active users on Jingdong. In Q1 219, the number of active users increased by 15% year-on-year. The platform has faced a growth.

Pinduoduo is a relatively new but fast-growing platform. The company reported a total revenue of RMB ¥4.5452 billion/US$ 6.6 billion, a year-on-year increase of 228%. As of March 2019, the number of active buyers has reached 443.3 million, a net increase of 148.4 million compared to the same period last year.

E-commerce will continue to grow bigger in the future. Mr. Peng points out that more and more aftermarket manufacturers and dealers are accelerating into the online market. And such mature platforms and the companies’ own sites provide a more complete sales channel for printing consumables.

“According to certain data, e-commerce shipments will exceed 20% of the total shipments of printing consumables in the next three years. Aftermarket companies should pay more attention and consider about this huge market.” Mr. Peng added.
