U.S. Printing-writing Paper Shipments Decreased in December

U.S. Printing-writing Paper Shipments Decreased in DecemberAccording to the American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA), U.S. total printing-writing paper shipments decreased 9% in December compared to December 2021 while U.S. purchases of total printing-writing papers increased 4% in December compared to the same month last year.

December shipments decreased in 3 of the 4 major P-W grades when compared to the same month the year before, with coated mechanical papers recording the sole year-ago increase. For the year-to-date, however, the opposite is true, with increases in 3 major grades and the only decline occurring in coated mechanical papers.

Previously, the association reported that total U.S. printing-writing paper shipments decreased 1% in November compared to November 2021.

U.S. purchases of total printing-writing papers increased 13% in November compared to the same month last year. Total printing-writing paper inventory levels increased 9% when compared to October 2022.

Some other highlights include:

  • Uncoated free sheet (UFS) paper shipments remained essentially flat (-0.3%) compared to November 2021 while the inventory level increased 8% compared to October 2022. UFS imports increased 55% while exports decreased 24% in October 2022.
  • S. purchases of coated free sheet (CFS) papers in November increased 22% compared to last November while the inventory level increased 14% compared to October 2022. CFS imports doubled, increasing 101%, while exports decreased 5% in October 2022.
  • Coated mechanical (CM) paper shipments increased 5% compared to November 2021 while the inventory level increased 10% compared to October 2022. CM imports increased 41% while exports decreased 4% in October 2022.
  • S. purchases of uncoated mechanical (UM) papers in November increased 5% compared to last November while the inventory level increased 2% compared to October 2022. UM imports and exports both decreased compared to October 2021, down 2% and 2% respectively.
