IDC: China HCP Market Shipment Hit Record High in Q4

According to IDC, China HCP market shipment turned out to be 6.51 million units in the fourth quarter of 2022 (Q4, 2022), up 31.7% year-over-year. Inkjet printer shipment increased 85.1% year-over-year to 3.51 million units, while laser printer shipment increased 1.7% year-over-year to 2.57 million units. Dot matrix printer shipment turned out to be 0.42 million units, down 17.6% year-over-year. Overall, China HCP market shipment turned out to be 19.96 million units in 2022, up 8.25 year-over-year.

IDC points out that the change is driven by the significant demand growth from the consumer market in Q4, which hit a record high. On the consumer market, inkjet printer sales increased 112.6% year-over-year, ink-tank printers increased 71.9% year-over-year, and laser printers increased 11.5% year-over-year.

IDC: China HCP Market Shipment Hit Record High in Q4

IDC believes that China consumer printer market demand still has growth potential in a long term.

Due to the impact brought on by Covid on the macro-economy, the commercial A4 laser printer market continues to struggle under pressure facing an increasingly severe competition.

In Q4, A3 laser multifunction printer market dropped 17.4% compared to the same period last year. Market demands for monochrome laser multifunction printers (<25 ppm or >40 ppm) market shrunk, while demands for laser multifunction printers with a printing speed range of 25-35 ppm remained stable. Color laser multifunction printer market share continued to grow even though the purchase budget was reduced for many enterprises, thanks to the stable demand for color printing.

IDC points out that manufacturers shifted from competing for market share to maintaining profit growth. Therefore, from the end of 2022, some manufacturers raised prices at different levels and shifted strategy priority to the layout of color machines.

The dot matrix printer market continued to shrink, due to the continuous decline of dot matrix printers as a result of covid.

IDC believes dot matrix printers will continue to suffer a significant decline in 2023, and it is likely that government and enterprise procurement will resume partially by the end of 2023.

With the complete ease of lockdown and restriction measures, China enters a new stage of resuming work and production. However, there is still a lot of uncertainty facing the printer market. To every large manufacturer in China, 2023 will be a real test for product quality, after-sale service, and business management, according to IDC.
