First-Hand Market Insights: Buyer Perspectives Reveal Key Trends in Malaysia’s Printing Industry
Southeast Asia continues to emerge as a dynamic and opportunity-rich region for the printing and imaging industry. According to the IMARC Group, the regional printer market reached USD 1.95 billion in 2024 and is expected to grow steadily to USD 2.22 billion by 2033.
Malaysia, one of the destinations of the RT VIP Imaging Expo-Asia 2026, plays an important role in this landscape. Statista estimates that the country’s printers and copiers market generated approximately USD 70.6 million in revenue in 2025, reflecting continued demand from businesses and office users.
To better understand the current market from a buyer’s perspective, the CR-T team conducted on-site visits with established Malaysian buyers, gaining valuable first-hand insights into purchasing trends, customer preferences, and industry developments.
Stable Demand and Diverse Procurement Channels
A leading Malaysian buyer specializes in the distribution of copier parts and consumables. The company maintains reliable sourcing and steady procurement volumes, primarily from Guangdong, China, with additional products sourced through the RemaxWorld Expo and other supplier networks. As a family-run business, it benefits from multi-generational involvement, ensuring continuity and strong customer relationships.
Despite the trend toward paperless offices, the buyer emphasized that printing remains essential for formal documents such as contracts, official records, and payment documentation. While emerging technologies like electronic whiteboards and smart displays may gradually reduce certain printing needs, traditional copiers remain indispensable for business operations.
The growth of e-commerce in Malaysia has diversified procurement channels. Buyers now source products through online channels, including Google searches and social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok), as well as traditional methods such as supplier visits and personal referrals. However, the buyer noted that product quality on e-commerce platforms can be inconsistent. As a result, customers often return to him for consistent quality and reliable service.
Regional differences also play an important role in purchasing decisions. In major cities such as Kuala Lumpur, customers demand high-quality consumables and place strong emphasis on fast and reliable after-sales service. In contrast, customers in northern regions and smaller cities tend to prioritize cost-effectiveness, as lower local labor costs make maintenance and repairs more affordable.
Service-Centered Strategy Strengthens Market Position
SH-OA, led by Ms. Sharine Ho, has been active in Malaysia’s printer and consumables market for over 20 years. The company focuses primarily on laser printers and consumables. Its business model combines B2B sales and distribution, offering both imported finished products and locally assembled consumables under its own brand.
Ms. Ho observed that individual consumers increasingly prefer purchasing original consumables online due to official warranties, convenience, and frequent promotional offers. However, SH-OA has chosen to maintain its focus on offline and B2B channels. According to Ms. Ho, online operations require significant working capital, competitive pricing pressures can reduce margins, and after-sales service obligations increase operational complexity. By concentrating on established channels and trusted business relationships, SH-OA continues to grow steadily and sustainably.
The market for printer repair and maintenance in Malaysia has also shifted. The number of workshop has declined, prompting business customers to place greater emphasis on service availability and reliability when selecting suppliers. Ms. Ho emphasized that dependable after-sales support and maintenance services remain key factors in building long-term trust and sustaining a competitive advantage.
