A spokesperson for the US-based corporation said the decision forms part of a wider strategy to simplify its business and align production with current client requirements. As part of the reorganisation, some toner manufacturing work will be transferred to Xerox’s facility in Webster, New York. The company has also confirmed that the Dundalk facility has been sold and may be redeveloped for future use.

The Dundalk plant, known as Building E, comprises approximately 156,658 square feet and is located within the Xerox Business Park on the Dublin Road. The wider 110-acre site was developed by Xerox in the late 1990s and became a significant feature of the town’s industrial landscape following the company’s decision in 1999 to establish manufacturing operations there. At the time, the investment was regarded as a major success for the IDA, with employment projections of more than 2,000 jobs.

Those projections were not realised as changes in technology and market conditions led to successive rounds of downsizing over the following decades. Job losses were announced as early as 2001, with further redundancies in subsequent years steadily reducing employment levels at the Dundalk operation.

The announcement in 2024 that Xerox intended to cut its global workforce by 15 per cent in the first quarter of the year raised concerns about the future of its Irish operations. Although the company initially stated that toner manufacturing in Dundalk would not be affected, the gradual reduction of activity at the site has culminated in the decision to close the plant.

Xerox confirmed that the last remaining employees have received redundancy packages in recent days but declined to provide figures on the number of workers impacted, stating that it does not comment on affected employee numbers.
