Epson claims it has achieved cumulative global sales of its high-capacity ink tank inkjet printers of 40 million units.

The Japanese OEM first launched high-capacity ink tank inkjet printers in October 2010, in Indonesia, and by FY2018 had expanded into some 150 countries and regions. Epson has continued to maintain the global top share in the high-capacity ink tank printer market for nine consecutive years.

40 Million Epson Printers Sold rtmworldIn FY2019, Epson will accelerate the transition from ink cartridge printers to high-capacity ink tank printers by continuing to highlight the latter’s formidable advantage in terms of cost per print and environmental performance. The company will also speed up the replacement of laser printers by strengthening its lineup of blazingly fast and durable office inkjets that allow users in all segments to print freely without worrying about costs.

Through these efforts, Epson plans to sell 10.2 million high-capacity ink tank printers in FY2019 – an increase of 13% compared to the previous fiscal year. This is expected to account for about 64% of total inkjet printer sales in Epson.

Epson bases its data on the IDC Worldwide Quarterly Hardcopy Peripherals Tracker report. According to IDC, notable highlights related to Epson from IDC’s first-quarter report include:

  • Ink Tank devices continued their positive momentum recording a 23.4% year-over-year gain in unit shipments in 1Q19. Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) and Latin America were the top two regions for ink tank shipments with 1.7 and 1.0 million units shipped in the quarter, respectively.
  • Epson regained the top inkjet position from Canon in Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) albeit at a marginal share advantage of 0.7%. Epson grew by about 210,000 units year over year due to the improved sales of its new generation of more compact ink tank printers, which were largely responsible for the growth of the ASEAN market and the biggest winner in China as the only one with a market share gain this quarter.

Shirley Ba, who is Senior Research Manager with IDC China, will be sharing more information about China’s boom in printing at the next RemaxWorld Expo and Summit on October 18, 2019 in Zhuhai China. Tickets are free.
