Xerox Codes its Cartridges by Region
Xerox is forcing its customers to only use toner cartridges from the region where they first bought the printer.
German technology news outlet, c’t magazine, reports Xerox uses region coding on their toner cartridges which locks the printer into only using cartridges according to the first type used.
heise.de reports a customer named bought a Xerox WorkCentre 6505DN for his small business, only to learn that the device would not accept Xerox toner cartridges that could be bought cheaper in other countries. Trying any kind of workaround or installing the “wrong” region-encoded cartridge will be blocked by the device.
techdirt.com says, “So if you use an North America cartridge you can’t use the cheaper Eastern European cartridge anymore. The printer’s display does NOT show this, nor does the hotline know about it.”
When c’t magazine reached out to Xerox, the response given, allegedly was this had been done to serve the customer better.
As also reported by techdirt.com, HP has also introduced region coding for some of its latest printers sold in Europe. HP’s US location and sliding US dollar has driven the initiative, since cartridge prices in Europe are much higher than those in the US.
