Microsoft Ends Support for Legacy Printer Drivers

Microsoft has begun phasing out support for legacy printer drivers in Windows 11, a move that will affect certain older devices beginning in January 2026. The change is part of a broader effort to modernize the Windows printing architecture and strengthen system security.

Under the new policy, new V3 and V4 driver submissions to Windows Update are blocked by default and subject to manual review. While some existing drivers may continue to receive updates, these will be handled on a case-by-case basis. Systems running Windows 11 or Windows Server 2025 and later will no longer be able to install new legacy printer drivers through Windows Update.

Microsoft maintains that most users will not experience disruption. Many printers manufactured within the past decade support IPP or newer driver models and can operate using Windows’ built-in class drivers without requiring vendor-specific software. Major printer manufacturers have published Windows 11 compatibility information and, in many cases, provide updated drivers for supported models.

However, printers that rely exclusively on legacy V3 or V4 drivers and do not support IPP may encounter issues. In such cases, devices may fail to install on updated systems or cease functioning after certain updates are applied. This risk is particularly relevant for organizations and households that continue to use older hardware.

Microsoft advises users who depend on legacy printers to contact their device manufacturer for updated, supported drivers or to consider transitioning to a modern printing solution. If no compatible driver is available, hardware replacement may ultimately be required.

Although some older printers may be affected, the overall disruption is expected to be limited. The majority of active printers are compatible with modern driver architectures, and legacy driver support is being curtailed in stages rather than removed abruptly.
