How will More Energy-efficient Printing Devices Impact the Market?

How will more energy-efficient printing devices impact the market?The printer OEMs claim their devices are becoming more eco-friendly. This is expected to help them capture a bigger market share in regions like Western Europe where the European Commission will mandate printers and supplies must be more sustainable.

According to market analyst Deborah Hawkins (pictured) from Keypoint Intelligence, the pandemic hit the industry hard, but there are some bright spots.

Apart from the supplies, Hawkins sees a big opportunity with the hardware as well. “Local hardware remanufacturing is likely to become ‘Factory or OEM Accredited’ and its benefits marketed in 2023,” she says. “That’s an opportunity for the Channel to respond to increasing demand for reused hardware from the market.”

Hawkins, who is currently based in Hamburg, Germany, is one of the three keynote speakers at this year’s RT Hot Potatoes Webinar being held on January 26, 2023.

Despite the huge opportunity for remanufactured products, she sees much work needs to be done by the Aftermarket if it is to maintain the healthy market share growth it has seen in the past two years. “The ‘waters are muddy’ with five different kinds of aftermarket supplies,” she says. “I’m referring to:

  • Private or white label products: are they Repackaged originals or compatibles?
  • Genuine Remanufactured (such as ETIRA endorsed);
  • Legitimate New Build Compatibles (those which are not produced by the original manufacturer, that carry their own patents and do not infringe any OEM patents);
  • Illegal or patent infringing compatibles; and finally
  • Clones or Counterfeits which masquerade as an original product.”

Hawkins has a history of more than 30 years in the document industry, which saw the shift from analogue to digital, standalone to networked, the emergence of solutions, and most recently a push into IT services. She has helped major industry brands to expand strategies and explore new ground. Hawkins also possesses a broad knowledge base of market research with experience including market sizing, forecasting, and competitive analysis.

“My presentation will reveal how hot an issue remanufacturing is,” Hawkins adds. “Some markets are moving towards the Aftermarket, but remanufacturing has work to do to earn its share of this growing opportunity.”
