Epson Completes New Factory for Inkjet Printhead Production
Tohoku Epson Corporation, a subsidiary of Seiko Epson Corporation, has completed construction of a new production facility (Building No. 6) in Japan’s Yamagata Prefecture. The 5.1-billion-yen investment will roughly quadruple the company’s production capacity for inkjet printheads, which are key components in a wide range of printers.

The expansion comes as demand for inkjet printing technology continues to grow across office, home, commercial, and industrial markets. Global interest in high-speed office printers and high-capacity ink tank models remains strong, while sectors such as textile printing are increasingly adopting digital inkjet solutions as they shift away from traditional analog methods.
Epson’s PrecisionCore MicroTFP printheads, used in many of these industrial and commercial printers, are designed for flexibility—allowing manufacturers to adapt print chips for different applications. The company expects continued growth in their use, both in business-class multifunction devices and in specialized printing systems.
The new factory is located next to an existing printhead production site and features a more efficient layout to streamline operations from component processing to final assembly. Epson has incorporated automated transport robots, space-saving process designs, and an energy-efficient air-handling system to reduce labor requirements, energy use, and operational costs.
The new facility also complements another recently completed Epson plant in Akita Prefecture. Together, the two sites will strengthen Japan-based production of PrecisionCore components and help ensure a stable supply by allowing flexible manufacturing between locations.
Beyond production efficiency, the facility has been designed with worker well-being and environmental considerations in mind, including reduced night shift operations and lower overall energy consumption.
