Brother Begins Remanufacturing Printer Drum Units in Slovakia

Brother Industries, Ltd. has begun remanufacturing used drum units for printers and All-in-One devices at its European manufacturing facility, Brother Industries (Slovakia) s.r.o. (BISK), with operations starting in July 2026.

The initiative expands Brother Group’s existing efforts to reuse and remanufacture used printing consumables. Since 2004, the group has collected used toner cartridges for laser printers and All-in-One devices, remanufactured them to the quality standards of new cartridges, and returned them to customers. As of March 31, 2026, more than 45 million toner cartridges had been remanufactured. The group’s recycling and remanufacturing efforts have also received external recognition, including certification under Germany’s Blue Angel ecolabel. In 2024, Brother expanded its remanufacturing activities to include ink cartridges used in inkjet printers and All-in-One devices.

Drawing on technologies and expertise developed through its toner cartridge remanufacturing operations, BISK has now added drum units to its remanufacturing activities. Drum units are key components in laser printing systems, transferring text and images onto paper and influencing print quality.

Under the new process, used drum units collected from customers are cleaned, fitted with replacement parts and subjected to quality inspections. Brother said the procedures are designed to ensure that remanufactured drum units meet the same quality standards as new units.

The company said that managing the collection, remanufacturing and redistribution of drum units internally, as it already does with toner cartridges, is intended to reduce waste and increase the reuse of resources.

The initiative forms part of the Brother Group Environmental Vision 2050, under which the group aims to maximize resource circulation by 2050, promote sustainable resource use and reduce the environmental impact of waste. Brother has also set a target of reducing its use of virgin materials in products by 25% by fiscal 2030 compared with fiscal 2022 levels.

The group said it will continue developing initiatives aimed at reducing environmental impacts and promoting more sustainable resource use.
