According to Wikipedia, “patent trolling or patent hoarding is a categorical or pejorative term applied to a person or company that attempts to enforce patent rights against accused infringers far beyond the patent’s actual value or contribution to the prior art, often through hardball legal tactics such as frivolous litigation, vexatious litigation, strategic lawsuit against public participation (SLAPP), and the like). Patent trolls often do not manufacture products or supply services based upon the patents in question.

Patent trolls have been active in the imaging supplies industry too. Dr Harvey Levenson—Professor Emeritus, Graphic Communication Department, from California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly), San Luis Obispo, California—has worked tirelessly to expose them. Levenson has written and lectured about patent trolls attacking the print industry with increasing attempts to extort large sums of money from OEMs and users of technology, claiming that they are infringing on previously issued patents.

Some industry media have referred to these trolls as the “cockroaches of the industry” because they are impossible to eradicate.
